  • 10 tricks to help you avoid split ends

It has to be said, as women, we do tend to abuse our hair a bit. From heated styling tools to backcombing, we probably wouldn’t put our skin through half the stuff we expect our hair to put up with on a daily basis. But, just as skin suffers if you don’t take care of it, your hair will too. That’s when breakage and split ends rear their ugly head. If there is one question I get asked every day, it’s ‘how do I avoid split ends?’. So here’s my top 10 tips to keep split ends at bay.

    1. Learn to work with second day hair.

Washing your hair every day strips your hair of natural oils that, instead of making your hair greasy, actually help to keep your hair healthy and nourished.  Washing your hair every other day allows your body to repair hair with its natural oils, leaving your hair silky, smooth and protected.  Sulphate free shampoos are the best, as they don’t remove too many of those natural oils when you do wash your hair. I recommend Pureology Strength Cure Shampoo.

    1. Brush wisely.iStock_000076542643_XXXLarg

For daily brushing, choose a cushioned paddle brush with flexible bristles. Always brush from root to end, tackling any knotting by holding the hair away from the scalp to avoid any tension that could cause breakage. Try Tangle Teezer Elite. Oh, and I don’t have to tell you to never brush wet hair, only comb or use your trusted Tangle Teezer.

    1. Shampoo only your scalp.

Let your hair sit normally once wet and simply lather your shampoo onto your scalp, then let the ends of your hair experience the second hand suds as you rinse the shampoo through your hair. This will avoid stripping any natural oils from the ends, causing them to become dry and brittle.

    1. Condition your ends.

This one is a no brainer; always use conditioner! Be sure to apply conditioner directly to the ends of your hair and then give it a couple of minutes to work it’s magic. When you rinse your hair, leave a small bit of residue. Make sure to avoid the root areas though, otherwise you’ll struggle to work with your hair.

    1. Let’s talk towel drying.

Do not scrub and rub a towel all over your head like a maniac, as this can cause damage. Instead, wrap a towel around your hair and simply squeeze different areas to draw the moisture out.

    1. Wide tooth combs with wet hair.

Invest in a wide toothed comb for use in your shower to lightly glide through your hair and loosely manage your locks without causing as much breakage.

    1. Blow-drying.

When blow-drying, do your best to avoid placing direct heat on the ends of your hair until absolutely necessary. Most people only think to use a heat protector when using straighteners or tongs, but your hair dryer produces a hefty amount of heat. Make sure you apply a heat protector to your hair before you start. I go for .

    1. Straightening.

When straightening your hair, always use a brush or comb to guide your hair through, to avoid straightening a strand in a creased or bent position, which can lead to breakage. And don’t repeat the same section over and over. Oh and remember my words about heat protection people.

    1. Curling.

Instead of beginning the curl at the ends of your hair and winding all the way up, begin at your roots and guide hair through the curling iron as you twist up. This way, your ends will only take in as much heat as needed to hold the style.

    1. A trip to your hair stylist.

To maintain hair condition, it’s vital to keep your visits to your stylist as regular as possible, every 6-8 weeks. This way they can remove any breakage and make sure your healthy hair has the best chance possible. Don’t avoid us, we can help!

  • Goodbye Summer…Hello Autumn

Ok, I’m calling it. It’s definitely not summer anymore. For the first time in months, I walked to the salon this morning wearing a jacket and scarf, closed toe shoes and may or may not have used a quick blast of the hairdryer to warm myself up when I arrived. Sad face.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Now that autumn is upon us, we can finally get to work on transforming our summer frazzled hair into healthy and chic autumn tresses. Let me share with you my top 5 tips and tricks for restoring your locks for Autumn/Winter 2015.

    1. Time to book that haircut. It’s essential after enjoying the summer sun that you book into the salon to give your hair a new lease of life and remove those damaged ends. Even if you’ve been really protective of your hair, I always recommend to my clients that they have a good trim in order to keep their hair looking and feeling healthy. If you’re seeing lots of split ends, ask your stylist for a cut with minimal layers and a strong baseline to eradicate that shattered end feel and build as much weight into the hair as possible.

    2. The summer months can have a drying effect on your hair, especially if you’ve continued to use heated styling tools. Treatments are a must to help restore your hair to its former glory. Dampen down your hair and apply Pureology Strength Cure Restorative Masque 150g (£23) through the lengths and ends. The longer you leave it to work its magic the better, so take my advice and pop it on before bed and then rinse out in the morning for gorgeous results that will bring life back to your hair and make it more manageable.

    3. Everyone knows that your colour can look a little dull after time in the sun. In between colour appointments you can ask your stylist for just a toner to refresh your colour. These are also available just in clear, which won’t change your colour but add a top coat of shine. If you’re after an at home version, try the EVO Fabuloso Colour Intensifying Conditioners 250ml (£23.00). These provide an instant hair colour refresh combined with a nourishing treatment to condition, repair, add shine, instantly tone and intensify hair colour. All in 3 minutes.

    4. Hair with sun and heat damage can become brittle and lack the essential proteins to keep your hair healthy. You’ll need to use products to balance this out. I reach for L’Oreal Professional Pro Keratin Shampoo 250ml (£10.99) to cleanse the hair and the pair it with EVO Mane Prescription Protein Treatment 150ml (£15.65). This intensive treatment works to rebuild strength and leave your hair in optimum condition. It’s definitely my secret weapon.

    5. Attempting a smooth and super sleek blow-dry on damaged hair can be a bit of a challenge, even for us professionals. Once you’ve got the right tools and products to hand though, it does make things a bit easier. First you need to build a good foundation using the right products for the job. I opt for Evo Easy Tiger Smoothing Fluid 200ml (£15.10) as it’s a great multitasking product that will make the hair manageable and full of vitality and shine. Using the nozzle on your hairdryer and pointing it downwards onto the hair shaft will smooth the cuticle down, making the hair smoother and have more shine. A professional ceramic brush, such as the Moroccan Oil Ceramic Barrel Brush (£13.85) will make things a lot easier too.

Let me know in the comments below what you’ll be doing to transform your hair this season.

  • 5 common blow-drying mistakes you’re probably (definitely) making

Getting that perfect, fresh from the salon blowdry while at home can be a bit of a struggle. Especially if you're making these common mistakes.

    1. You’re towel drying first

I know you’re thinking “isn’t that what I’m meant to do?” No girls it’s not. Think about it, when was the last time your hair stylist ruffled your head roughly with a towel? Hair becomes more fragile when it’s wet and rubbing it with a towel is more friction than it can take. Instead, remove excess water by blotting your hair first.

On that note …never brush wet hair. Use a comb or the Tangle Teezer Elite Detangling Brush to avoid breakage.

    2. You’re not using heat protector

Still? Tut tut. Hair dryers and straighteners can reach over 185 degrees and your hair needs some protection against that kind of heat. Personally I tend to reach for GHD Heat Protect Spray as it’s simple to use and as it’s a spray I know it’s distributed evenly.

    3. You’re starting out with hair that’s too wet

If your hair is still sopping wet, you might want to wait before breaking out your dryer. The longer you use it, the more damage you’re causing your hair. And when you use a dryer on just-stepped-out-of-the-shower locks, you’re also more likely to end up with frizz from the prolonged heat. Instead, let your hair air dry at least 10 minutes first (or take a tip from step 1 if you’re in a bit of a time crunch).

    4. You’re not sectioning your hair

If you dry hair in one large section you’ll never know if hair’s drying evenly, plus your top layer will inevitably take a large chunk of the heat. Instead start by sectioning your hair just above the ear, separating into two smaller sections at the nape of the neck. Continue to take sections roughly 2 inches thick moving up the hair. Sorted.

    5. You’re not using the nozzle

I’m sensing a blank look on many of your faces. You know…that duck-bill looking thing that came in the box with your dryer? That little baby helps direct the airflow directly onto the hair, making it easier to keep tension and smooth the cuticles for a super sleek look. It will help your hair dry faster since all the heat and air from your dryer is going exactly where it’s supposed to.
