  • Summer weather beauty hacks every woman needs to know

For me, summer is all about holidays, enjoying gorgeous weather and a cheeky Pimms here and there. It can’t just be me who’s noticed though that there are some aspects of the hot weather that can really put a dampener on your beauty routine. Whether it’s your hair attracting a bit more frizz than normal or your nail varnish bubbling up because of the heat, summer brings about a few challenges. This has been the hot topic on the salon floor this week, and my clients have been giving me the most crazy, but genius tips that they use to battle the beach beauty woes. I thought why not share them with you on this week’s blog? Remember, it’s not what you know…it’s who you know.

Dust your body with talcum powder when you hit the beach for a sand free getaway. I know you all know by now that talcum powder can act as a dry shampoo to absorb excess oil, it also works wonders at the beach for the same reasons. Once you’ve topped up your tan for the day, sprinkle talcum powder on your feet, legs, and anywhere else where you’ve got sand stuck to you. The powder will absorb the moisture on your skin from sweat and salt water (which is what makes the sand stick to you) and you’ll be able to wipe all of the sand off immediately. Say goodbye to finding sand in your car for the next month. Winner.

The safest way to tan and avoid UV rays is to avoid the sun altogether, but using self-tan lotions like St Tropez means that sometimes there will be mistakes. (It can’t just be me who’s forgotten to wash their hands after…hello orange hands) Apparently all you need to do to remove any streaky or overly orange patches on your skin, mix together baking powder and a bit of water to create a paste. Use the mixture to gently exfoliate your skin where you need to even out the tan and you’ll be set!

Take it from someone who knows, the worst part of heat styling hair during the summer is sweating while you’re styling. We all know the struggle of blow-drying our hair, and essentially needing another shower once we’re done because of sweat down our backs. Yum. Avoid all of this with a simple hack: Spray deodorant to the back of your neck about 10 minutes before blow-drying your hair. It’ll have the same antiperspirant effect on your neck as it does under your arms. Just don’t try this one on your face…you’ll have to stick to your translucent powder for that one.

I thought I’d throw in a tip of my own too. Make sure you apply dry shampoo at night so your hair stays oil free for morning. Dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend year-round, but during the summer, it’s actually better when you don’t apply it in the morning. Spritz your roots with dry shampoo at night to let the product absorb oil (and perspiration) throughout the night. Giving dry shampoo a bit of time to work its magic will give you much better results. My favourite at the moment is L’Oreal Fresh Dust.

As far as I’m concerned, Summer is my one chance to add some white to my wardrobe. I do find though that suntan lotion leaves yellowy stains on any white tops. Combine that with a few sweat stains and it’s not a pretty picture. Lemon juice has the solution. Squeeze lemon juice onto the stains before tossing into the washing machine. The acidity of the lemon will lift the sweat and lotion stains right out of your clothes.

Have you ever noticed how your nail varnishes change consistency in hotter temperatures? And nothing ruins a manicure like bubbles in your polish. During the summer, the heat can react with the ingredients in nail varnish to make it thicker and a bit gloopy. Store your nail polish in the fridge to keep it cool and to help you get a much smoother paint job when you do a manicure. If you can’t fit your entire collection in the fridge (because really, who could?) just put the colours you’ll be using, your base and top coat in the fridge for about an hour before you paint your nails for the same effect.

The amount of weird and wonderful tips that my clients have told me is just incredible. I’ve got lots more to share with you, so if you’ve enjoyed these let me know in the comments and I can make this into a little blog series for you. Enjoy the sunshine!

    xoxo

  • Freshen up your beauty regime

Sick of your same old beauty regime? Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise - yeah, we’ve heard it all before. Why not try something new?

    Beach waves

Here are my top ten tips on how to revamp your beauty regime this year and refresh up your routine:

    1. When you brush your teeth, also brush your lips. This will act as an exfoliator and get rid of any rough dead skin. After, swipe on a tinted lip balm or gloss with SPF, you'll get moisture, protection, and color all at once.
    2. Instead of always using foundation, switch to a tinted moisturiser. It will hydrate and even out your skin tone, plus it’s easier to blend than foundation.
    3. Instead of using a separate concealer, dip a Q-tip into your liquid foundation and tap it on blemishes.
    4. Skip bronzer in the morning and apply a facial self-tanner every few days to give yourself a healthy glow and even out your skin tone.
    5. On mornings when you need a fast eye brightener, trace a creamy nude liner pencil on lower lids, or dip a Q-tip in a light eye shadow and run it under your lower lashes.
    6. Don’t have time to do your hair? No problem, spray some sea salt spray into your just washed locks and scrunch upwards. It will dry quickly and you will have gorgeous natural beach waves.
    7. To boost volume or disguise your greasy roots, zigzag your parting or move it to the opposite side.
    8. Instead of using a cleanser every morning, just splash it with water. Your face doesn't get dirty while you sleep!
    9. Always use shaving gel. It gives you a closer shave so you won't have to use your razor as often, and it's hydrates your skin.
    10. Skip nail polish. Use a buffing block that files, smooths, and shines your nails for that glossy look!

Every once in a while, we all need to switch it up a bit, follow these tips for a natural more beautiful you.

  • 5 Top tips for Skin Detox

So with the new year upon us – its not only our exercise and diets that we should be thinking of – our skin has been through a lot during the festive season too and its time for a skin detox!

    skincare[4]

The winter is a harsh time for skin anyway – the constant changes between hot and cold temperatures when you go from warm houses out in to the cold can play havoc with our skin. That is the same reason why many get chapped lips in the winter months. The festive season sees us eating and drinking way too much – and it is these unhealthy habits that can leave our skin in need of some TLC.

How can a bad diet affect our skin?

The increases in fatty foods combined with lots of alcohol can result in blemishes, dark circles, dull complexion and a general unhealthy skin appearance. Do not fear however! There are steps you can take to ensure your skin is back to its gorgeous glowing self. Follow the tips below to look your best for the new year…

    1- Prep your skin

Firstly you need to prep your skin. For this use a facial scrub to really get into your pores and lift dead skin cells. This will help not only to make your face look and feel softer but will also help promote regeneration of healthy new skin cells thus ensuring your skin is fresh and glowing. Try Thalgo Freshness Exfoliator

    2- Moisture please

Secondly you need to ensure your skin has enough moisture. Skin which lacks moisture is more prone to breakouts and red discoloration. For deep moisture, use a night time moisturizer as these tend to be thicker. Apply generously before bed and wake up with super soft skin. Try Age Perfect Cell Renew Advanced Restoring Night Cream It doesn’t matter if you are young - starting to use a night cream with anti aging benefits when you are in your 20’s is fine as it actually helps to prevent you getting wrinkles.

    3 – Bye Bye Shadows

If your skin is tired from all the partying over the festive season it is likely you will have dark circles under your eyes. These make you look tired and don’t look fab when you need to look your best. Top tips for getting rid of these is to firstly de puff the area. The traditional cool cucumbers work really well for this. Simply pop onto eyes for 5 mins. The second step for perfect under eyes is a good lightener. A traditional concealer is too heavy for the delicate under eye area and can look cakey. Use a lightener similar to YSL touché éclat for a gentle under eye lift.

    4- Pimple free zone

Bad food and all the chocolate we consume over Christmas is certain to give us a pimple or two. For an over night fix for any horrid spots simply dab with toothpaste, go to bed and wash off in the morning. Your spot will be gone!

    5- You glow girl

A serum is a great way to add extra moisture to your skin. If you think of a moisturiser as providing moisture from the outside in, a serum works the opposite way, from the inside out. They make your moisturiser twice as effective, as the smaller particles and more intense ingredients from the serum can penetrate deeper into the skin than just your moisturiser can. They also allow skin to receive moisture without the grease! You will only need to use one bottle every 6 months to give your skin the boost it keep hydrated.  Try Thalgo Absolute Rehydrating Serum
