  • My Top 10 Skin Tips

    1. Do I really need to moisturise my oily skin?

Simple answer…yes! Just because your skin has excess oils doesn’t mean that it has enough water. It will still need a lightweight moisturizer that can keep your skin hydration levels up. Opt for an oil free moisturizer packed with botanicals to hydrate and refine. I love Dermalogica Active Moist 50ml £26.75. It’s packed with plant extracts that help improve skin texture and combat surface dehydration. Don’t be tempted by teen spot fighting products, as they can be full of artificial colour and fragrance that could aggravate oily skin further.

    2. Be sun smart

Just because the sun isn’t shining it doesn’t mean that you’re safe from the UV rays. UV rays are present even on the most overcast days so be sun safe everyday by protecting it with SPF. Make sure it’s a broad spectrum SPF to protect you from UVA and UVB rays. My top tip though is antioxidant vitamins. They are vital to help defend skin from free radicals that are generated from sun exposure. Dermalogica moisturisers are the easiest way to incorporate SPF into your routine as they all feature an SPF of at least 20.

    3. How many times should I cleanse?

Have you ever noticed that your hairstylist always shampoos your hair twice and how clean your scalp and hair feel afterwards? Double cleansing isn’t just for your hair. For skin that feels as though it’s been professionally cleaned everyday, I recommend cleansing twice, both morning and evening. Long lasting and waterproof makeup, combined with environmental debris and pollution mean that a single cleanse often doesn’t cut it.

    4. What not to wear

Do you feel like you are investing in great skincare but you’re still experiencing blackheads and bumps under the surface of your skin? It might be worth taking a closer look at the ingredients in your makeup as they may be contributing to the problem. Artificial colours commonly used in makeup are well known culprits for causing blocked pores and breakouts. Liquid items such as foundations or highlighters may contain mineral oils, which hamper the skins ability to shed dead skin cells. Look for makeup that uses natural earth and mineral pigments and of course, remember to double cleanse it off before bed.

    5. Tired Eyes

The skin around the eyes is thinner and produces less oil, therefore requires a specialist product designed for their specific concerns. Take care to use cooler water when removing eye make-up, and don’t be too heavy handed with this delicate skin. Dehydration can lead to fine lines and puffiness, so use a hydrating cream specifically formulated for the eyes. Try Thalgo Collagen Eye Roll On £29.50.

    6. Ingrowing Hairs

Most women who undergo some method of hair removal will at some point experience the distress of ingrowing hairs. Ingrown hairs form when hairs curl back and re-enter the same follicle and cause inflammation. To help reduce the risk of ingrowing hairs, regular exfoliation will help to lift dead skin cells, which may be trapping the hair. Products containing salicylic acid will gently exfoliate whilst maintaining moisture levels for skin health. When shaving, be aware that shaving ‘against the grain’ can encourage ingrown hairs, so always shave in the direction of the hair growth first.

    7. Will my products stop working once my skin is used to them?

The thought that products will stop working once the skin has become used to them is largely a myth. The reality is that the needs of the skin and the challenges it faces can change due to various influences such as climate, diet, hormones and even medications. Provided you are seeing results from your products, there is no need to change. However, you may find that at certain times of the year, such as during winter, or when the skin is experiencing a specific condition such as break outs that it can be beneficial to change your routine a little to ensure that all skin conditions are addressed.

    8. Nocturnal Repair

Your body has a natural 24hr biological rhythm that controls our metabolic processes night and day. Your skin is no exception. During the day, its top priority is to protect and shield against environmental factors. At night however, when there is some rest bite from daily demands, the skin produces less protective barrier and spends more time repairing and regenerating. Maximise skin benefits by boosting your nighttime regime with nourishing products. Try Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum 15ml £46.

    9. Patchy Makeup

Sometimes we can find that, even though you applied a perfect base of make-up in the morning, by lunchtime it looks uneven. This could be due to a hydration issue with your skin. Dry or dehydrated skin is soaking up any moisture it can, even the moisture in your makeup. Try wearing a silicone based product, such as Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair 30ml £30, which will even out the moisture content in your skin, leaving your makeup to sit evenly all day.

    10. When should I worry about ageing?

It’s no myth that prevention is better than cure. Whilst it’s great to start investing in professional grade products once we can visibly see those tell-tell lines begin to show, the reality is that our skins are ageing from the moment we are born. In our teens and twenties, our biggest weapon against ageing is the daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. In our thirties and forties, products packed with antioxidant vitamins will help to keep damage from free radicals under control, whilst moving into our fifties the use of skin repairing peptides as well as the renewal benefits of retinol and acid free smoothing technology will help to keep skin rejuvenated and in tip top condition. Try Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 30ml £58.50.

  • Everything you need to know about: Hyperpigmentation

Every year we all pour our efforts into combatting the most prominent signs of ageing, the dreaded fine lines and wrinkles. But there is a new act in town. Hyperpigmentation, which causes skin discolouration and uneven skin tone, may soon surpass wrinkles as the most frustrating sign of skin ageing. Believe it or not, studies have shown that an unbalanced skin tone can make a person look more that 12 years older. Never fear though, with a bit of knowledge behind you and the right products you can help keep hyperpigmentation at bay.

    So what causes hyperpigmentation?

Simple answer, it’s an over production of melanin in the skin. When produced at regular levels, melanin is what colours our skin, hair and eyes. But certain triggers can lead to overstimulation and a darker colour than our normal skin tone. Unprotected sun exposure, hormonal factors and trauma or scarring are all common triggers.

What can be done to reduce its appearance?

Regardless of the cause, hyperpigmentation and brown spots can be as stubborn to remove as red wine on a cream carpet. That said, let me share with you the best ways to treat brown spots.

    1. Call in a skin expert

You know I’m always an advocate for at home remedies, but it never hurts to get a professional’s advice. Knowledge is power people, and your skin expert will have bucket loads of great advice and nuggets of invaluable information to help you combat hyperpigmentation. Try to find a Dermalogica Skin Expert, as their face-mapping technique will help you to find out your own personal triggers for hyperpigmentation and help you discover the best products for the job.

    2. Apply SPF daily

Spending 30 minutes in the sun without proper sun protection can undo a month’s worth of effort in the fight against hyperpigmentation. UV exposure plays a key role in all hyperpigmentation issues so make sure you protect your skin. Sunscreen helps prevent UV light from bringing new spots to the surface and helps control the colour intensity of spots. There’s no need to add yet another product to your routine though. All Dermalogica moisturisers contain SPF so you can both hydrate your skin and protect it in one go. Try Dermalogica Sheer Tint SPF20 40ml £34. Wear it daily, or you’ll stunt any treatment you try.

    3. Know your ingredients

To safely and properly address brown spots, look for products that contain Retinol and specific peptides that help treat and prevent hyperpigmentation for skin brightening. Look out for Red and Brown Algae too, as they can help to enhance luminosity, refine skin tone and control the processes that contribute to hyperpigmentation. Dermalogica’s Powerbright TRX system features all these key ingredients in three products that can work with any skin regime. Try the Powerbright TRX Treatment Kit £33.70. This convenient travel-sized kit features all three PowerBright TRx™ treatment formulas, designed to help control and prevent factors that contribute to uneven skin tone. After cleansing, apply C-12 Pure Bright Serum directly to areas of uneven skin tone. Wait one minute for all the product to absorb. Follow with Pure Light SPF50 during the day and Pure Night during the evening.

    4. Be patient

Remember, there is no quick fix for brown spots. Traditionally, it takes at least 30 days of treatment (with SPF use!) before you see any real progress. Sometimes, spots can even look darker before they lighten, as you exfoliate and they begin to surface. Continued use of products and the Dermalogica Powerbright TRX system in particular can help spots start to fade. So stick with it and I promise you’ll see results.

  • Behind the Mask

These days, we all know that keeping our skin in the best shape requires the help of more than just a bit of soap and water. Truly adhering to your skins needs means enlisting the help of some key beauty products to help create the best skincare routine for your needs. In the days of BB creams, Hyaluronic Acid and Sonic Skincare Brushes, the old faithful known as the face mask has been somewhat forgotten. But there’s a reason why this old favourite hasn’t just gone away. When used correctly (and regularly) as part of your routine, masks can be instrumental in keeping your skin clean and refreshed. Whether your battling acne and oil, or dry and irritated skin, let me help you find your perfect facial partner. Here’s the inside story on what goes on behind the mask.

    For Dehydrated/Dry Skin:

You need to steer clear of clay or purifying masks, as they can dry out your skin even more. No more mud masks for you. Instead, make sure you go for a formula that is hydrating and will restore the moisture back into your skin. Remember not to skip you moisturiser either, as this will help to seal in the moisture to the skin.

I recommend: Thalgo Source Marine Ultra Hydra-Marine Mask 50ml £26.55. This mask helps to replump and replenish the skins hydration level in just 5 minutes. It even comes with a brush applicator tip to help make sure you apply the mask evenly to the skin. Use this twice a week for just 5 minutes and you’ll see results, guaranteed.

    For Acne-Prone/Oily Skin:

Masks should be a key player in your routine to help keep oil and breakouts at bay. Purifying or clarifying masks help draw out the impurities and toxins from the skin that can cause an over-production of sebum and blocked pores. Tip: after cleansing, make sure you tone your skin before applying the mask to ensure that all traces of oil are gone and to better prep the skin.

    I recommend:

Dermalogica MediBac Sebum Clearing Mask 75ml £39.80. This cooling mask with oil-absorbing clays helps clear and prevent breakouts while detoxifying skin. Salicylic Acid stimulates natural exfoliation to clear pore congestion, and cooling botanicals help purify, refine and eliminate excess oils. Use three times a week and or use topically to treat individual blemishes.

    For Radiance:

Masks can be a great source of radiance and can be just what your skin needs to give it a bit of rejuvenation and a brightening boost. They also work wonders on pigmentation and can help to revive and even out your complexion to give you a natural glow.

    I recommend:

Thalgo Cryodetox Masque 50ml £25. This luxuriously rich, ultra fresh gel formula is specifically designed to restore dull looking skin to a bright, luminous complexion. The intense treatment acts as an instant pick me up and gives your skin a breath of fresh air. Apply twice a week for 10-15minutes to reveal your skins inner glow.

    For Anti-Ageing:

Masks can help you face fine lines and wrinkles head on with a formula that will keep skin feeling plump, supple and line free. Masks can give your skin a supercharged dose of collagen and important anti-ageing ingredients to help fight the first signs of ageing head on. Need I say more?

    I recommend:

Dermalogica Multi Vitamin Power Recovery Mask 75ml £34.50. This is an ultra-replenishing, antioxidant rich mask that helps rescue stressed, ageing skin. Apply after cleansing as a revitalising remedy for dulling, dry, dehydrated, lackluster, photo-damaged skin. Botanicals help soothe and calm stressed skin while vitamins A, C and E help repair damaged, ageing skin.
