  • Kerastase Goes Natural – Introducing Aura Botanica

If you’re a fan of natural and gentle haircare, then Kerastase’s new range, Aura Botanica, has your name written all over it. Each product in the range features up to 99% naturally sourced ingredients. Even the packaging lives up to the eco warrior brief, with its 100% recycled plastic.

We thought we’d give you the lowdown on the key products in Kerastase’s new range. Hopefully you’ll be as excited as we are.

Now, we all know how much you lot love a hair oil…and boy does this range deliver the goods. Aura Botanica’s two key ingredients are Samoan Coconut Oil and Moroccan Oil, but also features Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Sweet Orange Essential Oil, Rosemary Extract and Damask Rose Floral Water. As if that wasn’t enough, all the formulas are sulphate and silicone free. Heaven.

First things first, shampoo. Aura Botanica Bain Micellaire is a gentle micellar shampoo that promises gentle-yet-thorough cleansing action. Enriched with Coconut and Argan oil, it leaves hair silky and shiny and perfectly prepped. Your conditioner of choice. Who knew the micellar trend had found its way to haircare?

Next step is your conditioner. Aura Botanica Soin Fondamental is a moisturising balm that softens and de-tangles hair to prevent breakage. We’d say it’s Ideal for dry, dull, and lifeless hair. Deeply nourishing, it revitalizes and softens as it melts into hair to provide 48-hour long nutrition and anti-frizz action.

Here’s where the oils truly kick in. Essence d’Éclat is a moisturising oil-mist with an aromatic blend of nourishing oils. The lightweight, ultra-fine mist provides 48-hour nutrition and 72-hour anti-frizz action. You can use it before blow-drying as a heat protector or as a finishing product, to give perfect shine.

If you prefer a true oil, instead of a mist, then Aura Botanica has you covered. Concentré Essentiel restores pure vitality to damaged hair and dry scalp. The aromatic oil, infused with sweet orange extracts, nourishes and revitalizes dull hair and skin. Plus, it has a dual use, as you can also use is as a body oil…winner winner.

If you’re after a gentle and natural haircare range that can deliver beautiful and nourished hair, look no further than Aura Botanica

  • How to: Create the ‘Undone’ Volume Look

Undone volume. It’s one of those styles that everyone lusts after, but so few feel confident they can achieve without the help of their stylist. It’s the celebrity go to look and as a result has become one of the most requested blow-dry looks ever. But trust me ladies, the beauty of this style is that it’s meant to look messy and scream ‘I just woke up like this’ (yeah right). With just a few hints and tips from a pro, you can achieve this look at home and have everyone thinking you’ve got one hell of a loyalty card at the salon.

    Step 1: Root lift

Apply a root lift spray, such as L’Oreal Professionnel Volumetry Anti-Gravity Volume Root Spray 125ml then, using your hairdryer without the nozzle, start to dry with your fingers, lifting the hair and directing the airflow into the root area.

    Step 2: Curl up

Pop your hairdryer nozzle back on and grab a Moroccanoil Ceramic Barrel Brush (or similar) and direct the airflow from the roots to ends. Roll the hair around the brush back towards the heat, heating the hair as you roll. Now for the clever bit…ever wondered what that cold button on your dryer was for? Use it now to set the hair before unwrapping the hair, back-brushing lightly at the root and pinning into a barrel curl. That’s how the pro’s do it.

    Step 3: Pin curls

Carry on section by section through your hair, remembering to take vertical sections and directing the heat away from the face. Repeat the previous step to complete the sides and back of the head, wrapping and pinning each section.

    Step 4: Get that lift

Now you’ve reached the crown and the top start taking horizontal sections, elevating each section vertically and directing the nozzle into the root area for extra lift

    Step 5: Tease out

Unpin each section and gently tease the hair at the root using a comb before spritzing with hairspray. I love Tigi Catwalk Session Series Finishing Hairspray. Shake the style out with your hands then use your fingers to dress it out to our desired finish.

Simple right?! Give it a go and you’ll be amazed at the results.

  • How to: Fishtail Plait

plaitIf I had a pound for every time a client asked me to teach them to do a fishtail plait, I’d be a very rich stylist that’s for sure! It has got to be the most requested quick-style of the moment, but it can be a little intimidating for those new to up-dos. Trust me though, braids and plaits are some of the easiest styles to get right once you’ve had some practice. I thought I’d give you a quick tutorial of how you can achieve this simple but gorgeous look at home, in just 5 steps.

    Step 1:

Create a Ponytail. To begin, gather your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Use a throwaway elastic band - one that you can snip away with scissors at the end.

    Step 2:

Divide Your Ponytail. Next, split your ponytail evenly into two sections. Unlike the classic plait, a fishtail plait only requires two sections.

    Step 3:

Begin Weaving. Use your finger to separate a small section of your hair from the outer edge near the elastic and cross it over to the opposite side (overlapping just like you would if you were doing a standard plait). Re-grip your hair to tighten plait, still holding two sections. Repeat with a small section from the other side.

    Step 4:

Maintain Evenness. Continue overlapping pieces from both sides of your ponytail, all the way down to your ends. Be sure to pull small sections from underneath to cross over, and try to grab the same size (about a half inch) sections from each side.

    Step 5:

Finish Your Look. Once you've woven your hair down to the ends, secure the fishtail plait with another elastic band. Then, use scissors to carefully cut out the elastic at the base of your ponytail. Finish your fishtail braid by gently tugging on your braid with your fingers to loosen it for an effortless look.

    It really is that simple.
